Cesar Wilson
It has been about three years since I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. In November of 2004, the doctor told me that he saw something that he wasn’t too pleased with. I had a biopsy and it came back as malignant.
You know, even before I got the diagnosis, I kind of figured it might happen. I am the baby in a family of 12 brothers and sisters who grew up in northeast Louisiana in the little town of Tallulah, and I remember that two of my older brothers had problems with urination. They didn’t have medical help — they were all just up there on the farm and didn’t have adequate medical facilities to go to – and I think they probably had prostate cancer and didn’t know it.
The doctors caught my prostate cancer in the early stages. I wasn’t afraid that I would lose my life. I figured they could take care of it. After I was diagnosed, I spoke with two doctors. My wife and son came with me for the consultations and we all listened to what the doctors had to say. I read a few books about it.
The treatment that I opted for was 35 shots of external radiation – five shots a week, for seven weeks — and four months later I had the seed implants All I s done by computer. The doctor has a computer that shows him where to put the seeds and how to put them, radiation placed on top of tumor….seeds would take care of it. Way to make sure they have everything.[Mr. Wilson, could you please explain more about what the seed implants are?]
Everything seems to be going well. My PSAs are down to 0.0. Can’t get better than that.
Sometimes my energy level might be low. But I do quite a bit of physical work keeping up the yard putting in flower beds, cutting my grass, putting in a vegetable garden. I usually go for a walk every morning. Unlike my brothers, I went to the doctor, received radiation treatment, and my prostate cancer was caught in the early stages. I’m pretty active and I have a lot of fun.
I get on my son – I literally carried him to the doctor. He got checked out, and he’s okay. He has three sons and the oldest one is 32 now. And I hope that my son will get on their case about getting checked out by the doctor when it’s time.
